By Gary Alan Davis
Arthur C. Clarke's Vision
Sir Arthur C. Clarke is generally credited with coming up with the concept of
using satellites in geosynchronous orbits to relay communications signals around
the world. In his honor, these are sometimes referred to as Clarke orbits. A
geosynchronous orbit simply means that the satellite is placed at an altitude of
22,300 miles above the earth's equator and travels at the same speed as the earth's rotational
speed. This keeps the satellite in the same spot above the earth at all times.
Clarke wrote an article titled "Extraterrestrial Relays", which was published
in Wireless World Magazine back in 1945. In his article Clarke, envisioned
three 'space platforms' placed at 22,300 miles above the earth and that worldwide
communications could thus be achieved.
Father of Satellite TV
But it is H. Taylor Howard a Stanford University Professor and former NASA scientist
Emeritus, who is generally acknowledged as the 'Father
of Satellite TV'. Howard designed and built the first satellite antenna and receiver
in his San Andreas, California garage in 1976. Howard died in a plane crash in 2002
at the age of 70. Now 32 years after Howards invention, it is doubtful that he
could have envisioned the quantum leap that satellite TV technology has made.
First Satellite - Sputnik
The very first satellite ever placed into earth orbit was Sputnik, which was launched
by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957. The launch of Sputnik began what is commonly
referred to as the "space race". The United States answered with the successful
launch of Explorer I on January 1, 1958. Later that same year, NASA was created on Oct. 1, 1958, to perform civilian research related to space flight and aeronautics.
First Communications Satellite - Syncom II
The first communication satellite named Syncom II was developed by a group of businesses and government entities in 1963. Syncom II orbited at 22,300 miles over the Atlantic; the first
actual satellite communication was on July 26, 1963, between a U.S. Navy ship in Lagos,
Nigeria and the U.S. Army naval station in Lakehurst, New Jersey. However it wasn't
until 1978 that the television industry began using satellite communication for the
television industry. In 1975 a BBC engineer by the name of Stephen Birkill
built an experimental system for receiving Satellite Instructional Television.
Over the next three years Birkill continued to work on his system and in 1978 he
met Bob Cooper, a cable TV technical journalist and amateur radio enthusiast in the U.S
and Cooper invited Birkill to a cable TV operator's conference and trade show CC)S-78.
It was at the trade show that several satellite TV enthusiasts decided to help Birkill
with his experiments. Also, on March 1, 1978 the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS)
introduced the Public Television Satellite Serivce and as satellite technology
improved it was used more and more by broadcasters.
Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS)
In 1980, the FCC established the Direct Broadcast Satellite (DBS), a new service
that consisted of a broadcast satellite in geostationary orbit, facilities for
transmitting signals to the satellite, and receiving equipment (black box) needed for people to access the signals. In turn, broadcasters developed methods of scrambling their signals,
forcing consumers to purchase a decoder, or a direct to home (DTH) satellite receiver,
from a satellite program provider. Before this signals could be receive by anyone
with a dish at no charge. Both DISH Network and DIRECTV are Direct Broadcast Satellite
providers. Soon after from 1981 to the early 1990's the 'big dish' market soared.
You could see these big ugly dishes a mile away. But they were cumbersome and very
hard to install.
As this stage of satellite TV development; it was much easier to
just have cable TV. Also the average cost of pruchasing a satellite dish and system
back in 1980 was a staggering $10,000. By 1985 that cost had dropped to around
$3,000., but still a hefty price to pay. In 1984 the U.S. Congress passed the 1984
Cable Act. This Act allowed for cable providers to scramble their transmission signals
thus bringing an end to the days of free satellite TV. In short, the 1984 Cable Act made
it illegal to steal satellite signals without paying for the programming.
Satellite TV - Enter DIRECTV and DISH Network
In the early 1990's four large cable companies joined together to launch a Direct
Broadcast Satellite company named Primestar. In June of 1994 the Hughes DIRECTV
Satellite System was launched. DIRECTV later purchased Primestar.
DIRECTV pioneered the development of the mini-dish, a small 18" diameter dish.
Today, DIRECTV boasts over 16 million households that have DIRECTV service. In 1996 the DISH Network Company a division of EchoStar Communications Corporation was formed and DISH now boasts over 13 million U.S. households with DISH Network Satellite Service. Both companies now
offer hundreds of programming channels to watch and each offers over 70 national channels
in High-Definition (HD). Both DIRECTV and DISH Network also offer dozens of satellite
radio channels and both have now gotten into providing High Speed Internet service.
Where satellite dishes alone once costs $10,.000., today both the satellite giants
offer complete satellite systems, including the satellite dish for free.
Today satellite TV is broadcast all over the world; making Arthur C. Clarke's dream a reality.
G Alan Davis is owner of [http://www.digitaldish.com/]Digital Dish, has over five years experience in the satellite TV business, selling both DIRECTV and [http://www.digitaldish.com/]DISH Network and has written numerous articles on the subject.

Satellite TV Providers: Now Giving You A Wide Range of Programming Possibilities. By Tim Gorman
Satellite TV became available to homes in the United States in the early 1980s. Back then, consumer-owned satellite dishes were about 12 feet in diameter. Nowadays, though, satellite dishes are much smaller.
There were many satellite TV providers but Dish Network and DirecTV are the two main satellite TV providers today. Another satellite TV provider is Sky Angel, although it offers Christian and family-friendly programming. Sky Angel and Dish Network have an agreement that their customers can view each other's programs using the same equipment.
Dish Network
Dish Network has been providing satellite TV programming since the 1980s. The company is owned by Echostar, a company based in Colorado. In 2003, Dish Network's subscriber base in the United States reached five million households. That same year, Dish Networked partnered with SBC Communications and they began offering SBC Dish Network television service. In 2005, Dish Network bought Voom's satellite and the company added the Voom programming to its satellite TV offering.
In 2005, Dish Network launched its most impressive product to date, PocketDish. With PocketDish, subscribers can view and save anything that was recorded on the Dish Network DVR. Subscribers can download programs or movies onto their PocketDish, take it over to the house of a friend who doesn't have satellite TV and watch the shows from there. Subscribers simply need to hook the PocketDish to a television and that's it...they can now watch satellite TV on a different television.
DirecTV
DirectTV, Dish Network's rival in the satellite TV service industry, reportedly has 15 million subscribers in the United States and 1.5 million subscribers in Latin America. Hughes Electronics introduced DirecTV's first satellite in 1994. Nine years later, in 2003, Hughes Electronics sold DirecTV to News Corporation.
DirecTV is the leading satellite provider in the United States. Like Dish Network, DirecTV offers high-definition satellite service to its subscribers. The company also offers the digital video recorder (DVR) set-top box.
Satellite TV offers a wide variety of programming at your fingertips. Talk to representatives of satellite TV providers and inquire about the service they offer.

Digital Satellite TV Systems: A Whole New Entertainment World, By Claudia Walters
Technology nowadays is truly amazing. One of these stunning new technologies that bring great impacts to our live styles is digital satellite TV systems. Satellite TV systems handle a number of tasks, including communicating with a satellite 22,000 miles above the earth’s surface, unscrambling and encrypted signals, converting the signal into analog or HDTV format as needed by the TV set and splitting out one channel at a time so that the viewer receives only that satellite television channel they are seeking. Digital satellite receivers open up a whole world of TV entertainment with amazing technology. These devices offer features that parents and couch potatoes could only have dreamed of in years past.
From the user angle, there are lots of functions in Digital satellite systems that bring in big improvements to their lifestyles. For example, satellite TV systems (both Dish Network and DirecTV) allow parents to lock out programming inappropriate for their children. These receivers also permit pausing live television and video recording.
Satellite TV systems will also keep track of pay-for-view programming. The receiver then communicates with computer equipment at the provider’s business to transmit billing information.
Besides all these, another great features by Dish Network and DirecTV is that these digital satellite systems are offered free! Receivers are included in packages of equipment that are supplied to subscriber homes, absolutely free. These free satellite TV systems include free equipment, free shipping and free installation. These are amazing machines that worth more than $1,500, and they can be owned by you without paying a penny-- perhaps this explains why satellite TV systems became one of the fastest growing products in USA.

Is Satellite TV a Better Choice Than The Cables? By Teddy Low
The era of satellite television has begun. In the past few years, satellite television providers have turned tables on their cable counterparts, who committed the grave mistake of misunderstanding the power of their competitors, and gripped the television distribution market with awe.
When satellite television viewing was first introduced, the cable TV operators did not bother much about it as the dishes were expensive and were too big and bulky. They presumed that the industry wouldn't last for long and since they had been in business for over a decade people would still prefer them to the satellite television providers.
But little did they realize that the satellite television industry was here to stay. The satellite dishes soon got sleeker, the systems improved, prices dropped, quality went up and customer satisfaction rose. As per recent surveys satellite customers pay $10 less than their cable counterparts. The TV picture is in an all-digital format and the reception quality is topnotch. All in brief, satellite TV service is looking more and more competitive and the consumers started buying it.
Before the cable TV companies manage to react, satellite TV companies (namely Dish Network and DirecTV) started to taking up cable's market. Cable operators provide for an upgrade to digital however they do not guarantee that all the channels will be included in the same. In addition the increasing competition, the satellite television industry assures a constant competitive pricing. This makes satellite TV a much preferred choice of entertainment media when compared to the normal cable network.
So is satellite TV better than the cables? You bet!
Just in case you are looking for bargains for Dish Network services, the online ordering process is pretty simple. All you need to do is to select the right retailer, place your order and schedule the convenient time for system installation, and wait home at the pre-set installation time. You will only need to fix your programming choices only when the system is fixed. You can always learn more about Dish Network, as well as Direct TV offers at Satellite TV Issue.

The major satellite TV providers such as DirecTV and Dish Network are keen to make it easy to get set up with a satellite TV system in your home. Because of this, they offer free standard professional installation when you order a satellite TV service from them or from any of their retailers. So you don't really have to look for other Satellite TV installers.
When you order your free satellite TV system, you will usually get DirecTV or Dish Network receivers setup in up to 4 rooms including HD and DVR receivers for free. They also offer free shipping and handling because the equipment is shipped to a certified local satellite TV installer who then brings all the equipment you need to your home for installation.
DirecTV and other satellite TV providers have a nationwide network of local satellite TV installers. During the installation of your satellite TV system, some providers also allow you to make changes to your order. For example, with DIRECTV, you can add a DirecTV service to another room or upgrade to DVR or HD while the Satellite TV Installers are at your home.
The Free standard professional satellite TV installation from both Dish Network and Direct TV usually include:
- Mounting of the satellite TV dish on an outside wall with all the required hardware and equipment.
- Enough cable for standard receivers and for advanced product installations.
